What really gets me is why Da-Jung feels it’s right not to use the money to pay off her debt, or for that matter, why Dal-Goo feels guilty for taking the money. I’m not really disappointed or upset at Dal-Goo for taking the money.

This was an annoying end to an otherwise great second round.

This prompts him to take the money Da-Jung won off of the second round (really, Da-Jung, you’re going to fall asleep with your debt collector and case full of money right next to each other?). The Jo Dal-Goo Subplot: At the end of Episode 4, we see Jo Dal-Goo again, and this time, he’s getting beaten up by his boss for not being a good debt collector. She assumed her friend Oh Jung-Ah’s identity before the round began and formed invalid contracts with everyone so that she would ultimately end up being the winner and keeping all the money to herself.Īs if you were the one who figured it out…

the new Fukunaga): For those of you who don’t know who Jamie is (in which case you probably shouldn’t be reading this post since it’s full of spoilers), she is the mysterious Player X. Did anybody else wonder why she had to drink an entire cup of coffee every time, instead of, say, half a cup? This is less of an excellent addition compared to the phone-swapping, but I did find it funny.

  • Coffee Cup Signal: This was the form of communication that Player X came up with that allows her to not talk to her other two teams for the rest of the round.
  • I felt this was an excellent addition to all the strategies/tactics being used this round, as it forces Player X to find other means of communication.
  • Swapping Phones: After Cha Woo-Jin holds his first strategy meeting, he instructs his team to randomly swap phones with one another.
  • Of course, I do wonder how in the short span of 10-15 minutes Oh Jung Ah/Jamie was able to form teams and draw up contracts with the remaining 14 players, but that’s a detail that can be easily ignored. This gives this round a sense of urgency that I didn’t really see in the Japanese version.
  • A Shorter Round: Each contestant initially only has 2 hours to vote for each question as opposed to 6 hours.
  • Here are a few interesting ones I’ve noticed: Episodes 3 and 4 continue to make subtle changes to the tactics and strategies used in the game, except this time, they’re actually good changes. Strategical Differences: I’ve noted in my posts on the previous episodes that I’ve so far been somewhat disappointed with all of the game-related changes that the Korean adaptation has made, including the introduction of smartphones for contestants and the whole “the liar game is now a game show” thing. Actually, on second thought, all the scenes involving the fortune teller are really funny, mostly because she’s still playing the whole psychic shtick even though nobody believes her anymore. In the strategy meetings, the interactions between the fortune teller and the guy with OCD are hilarious. The Other Players: I’m really liking that some of the other contestants are clearly there to serve as comic relief. There are so many good things about these episodes (in addition to a few quirks) that it gives me a lot of hope for the rest of the season. In the Korean adaptation, we see lies, distrust, backstabbing, and predictions of said backstabbing, all in the span of two episodes. The second round is where the “game” part of the title comes in and where we get an idea of exactly how deep and complex the tricks and manipulation can get… You get to really see how naive and honest Nao/Nam Da-Jung is, and on the other side, how smart and cunning Akiyama/Cha Woo-Jin is. The first round, although it does introduce you to the “liar” part of Liar Game, is there mainly as an extended introduction for the main characters.

In my opinion, out of all the games that are ever played in the liar game, whether it be in the original manga or the Japanese drama, the minority game is the one that most embodies the spirit of the series as a whole.
